Agent Demands Sink Paris Move
Aston Villa are advancing quickly in talks to sign Zion Suzuki after Paris Saint-Germain's proposed transfer for the Parma goalkeeper dramatically collapsed. Villa have made formal contact with both Parma and the player's representatives, ready to match the €35 million package PSG had already agreed.
The Paris move looked practically done just days ago. PSG had reached a verbal agreement worth around €35 million including add-ons, even sending a private jet to collect Suzuki for his medical. However, everything unravelled once his entourage reportedly made a late demand for up to €5 million in commission, a request PSG considered close to blackmail. French regulations cap agent fees at 10 percent of salary, meaning the demand may have breached that limit entirely.
Consequently, PSG walked away rather than continue negotiating. Some reports suggest the collapse may have partly suited Paris anyway, given Suzuki wouldn't have been guaranteed regular starts behind Lucas Chevalier. A loan to Juventus had also been floated before that plan fell through weeks earlier.
Villa, though, wasted no time capitalising. Fabrizio Romano confirmed the club immediately contacted Parma once news of the collapse broke, working to hijack the deal on essentially identical financial terms.
Emiliano Martinez Situation Adds Context
Notably, this pursuit connects directly to uncertainty surrounding Emiliano Martinez. Juventus have renewed interest in the Argentine, alongside Manchester City's Ederson and Tottenham's Guglielmo Vicario, on their goalkeeping shortlist. Villa appear to be preparing for either outcome, positioning Suzuki as either Martinez's eventual successor or immediate senior competition.
Suzuki's growing reputation only strengthens the appeal. He started all four of Japan's matches at this summer's World Cup before elimination against Brazil, drawing praise from Real Madrid legend Iker Casillas, who described him as possessing every quality needed to become world-class.
With talks between all parties now underway, according to Yardbarker, Villa appear well-positioned to complete a deal before the September deadline.
