Promised Payments Never Materialize

Several US cities that hosted the 2026 World Cup are now chasing FIFA for millions of dollars they say were promised but never delivered. The dispute marks another awkward setback for embattled president Gianni Infantino.

Before last year's Club World Cup, Infantino publicly announced $1million contributions to each of eleven host cities. Officials say FIFA later assured them the same "legacy" funding would follow for this year's World Cup, hosted across the United States, Mexico and Canada.

That promise, however, never became reality. Four executives representing US host committees told reporters that senior FIFA management repeatedly confirmed the payments verbally, yet nothing has arrived since the tournament concluded last month.

Cities involved include Seattle, Los Angeles, Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Miami, Boston and the New York and New Jersey region. Collectively, they're now seeking updates directly from FIFA staff, frustrated by the ongoing silence.

What makes the situation particularly awkward is FIFA's financial position. The organization reported revenues exceeding $15billion across its 2023 to 2026 cycle, making the missing contributions appear minor by comparison, yet symbolically significant given the circumstances.

Local officials also point toward the broader financial burden shouldered by American taxpayers. Security, transportation and logistical costs stretched into the billions, adding weight to complaints that FIFA hasn't reciprocated fairly.

Another Blow For Infantino's Leadership

This controversy arrives during an already turbulent stretch for Infantino. His recent proposal to sell private investment stakes tied to World Cup commercial ventures collapsed after UEFA threatened a full boycott of future competitions.

CONCACAF has also issued repeated criticism, while both the Welsh and English football associations recently confirmed they won't support his re-election bid scheduled for March 2027. Pressure, clearly, keeps mounting from multiple directions simultaneously.

According to The Athletic, FIFA declined to comment when directly questioned about the unpaid contributions, leaving host cities without any clear timeline for resolution.

Whether these payments eventually materialize remains uncertain. Regardless, the episode adds fresh scrutiny to an administration already fighting to maintain confidence heading into its next leadership contest.
