Clubs Unite For Fitting Tribute

Newcastle United and Liverpool are in talks over a tribute to Kevin Keegan ahead of their Premier League opener at St James' Park on August 23rd. Both clubs confirmed communication is already underway, aiming to ensure Keegan's memory is marked appropriately before kickoff that Sunday.

Keegan passed away this week at the age of 75, following a diagnosis of stage four cancer revealed earlier this year. His family confirmed he was surrounded by his wife and daughters in his final moments. Tributes poured in immediately from across football, reflecting his enormous influence on the English game.

Few players have left such a lasting mark on two clubs simultaneously. At Liverpool, Keegan spent six trophy laden years, winning three league titles alongside the European Cup, two UEFA Cups, and an FA Cup. That success established him as one of the era's defining forwards, twice earning European Footballer of the Year honours along the way.

Newcastle, though, arguably shaped his legend even further. He arrived as a player in 1982, energising Tyneside instantly, before returning a decade later as manager. His "Entertainers" era remains fondly remembered, blending attacking football with genuine emotional connection to supporters.

Preparations Already Underway

Newcastle confirmed it's working closely with its Fan Advisory Board, the Newcastle United Supporters Trust, and fan group Wor Flags to shape suitable tributes. The Premier League itself has also joined these discussions, underlining the significance surrounding Keegan's passing.

Wor Flags already announced plans for their own display, inviting fan donations toward what they called a fitting tribute for the most important figure in the club's history. Meanwhile, Newcastle's men's, women's, and under-21 squads will wear black armbands throughout preseason as an immediate gesture of respect.

Further tributes arrive sooner, too. Keegan's image will appear on St James' Park screens during upcoming preseason fixtures against Bayer Leverkusen and Strasbourg, timed deliberately to the seventh minute, honouring his iconic number seven shirt.

Beyond August 23rd, Newcastle indicated it will consult Keegan's family regarding a permanent memorial, ensuring his legacy endures well beyond this single occasion.
