Defamation Claim Filed In High Court

Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis has launched legal action against Crystal Palace, filing a defamation claim in London's High Court over a banner unfurled by Eagles supporters. The dispute traces back nearly a year, to a Premier League clash between the two clubs at Selhurst Park.

The banner in question depicted Marinakis holding a gun to the head of Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White. Alongside the graphic image, it carried a pointed message denying any involvement in "blackmail, match-fixing, drug trafficking or corruption." Marinakis has consistently rejected such allegations, and his lawyers formally lodged the claim on Monday, naming CPFC Limited among the defendants.

Context around the imagery matters considerably. Gibbs-White had previously flirted with a move away from Forest before ultimately performing a U-turn and committing his long-term future to the City Ground project. He subsequently sat alongside Marinakis for an interview discussing that decision, an appearance the Palace banner appeared to reference directly.

Tensions between the two clubs run deeper than a single afternoon, though. Forest took Palace's place in last season's Europa League after UEFA ruled the south London club breached multi-club ownership regulations, a decision that stung Palace supporters considerably. That grievance, many believe, helped fuel the hostility displayed on the terraces during last August's fixture.

FA Charge Preceded Legal Escalation

Notably, this isn't the first consequence stemming from that banner. The Football Association charged Crystal Palace with misconduct back in November 2025, alleging the club failed to prevent supporters behaving in an offensive or provocative manner. Strict regulations govern defamatory or provocative messaging inside English football grounds.

This legal filing also isn't Marinakis' first defamation battle. He's separately pursuing a £2.1 million libel case against figures accused of orchestrating a smear campaign involving similarly serious allegations, underlining how seriously he treats such claims regardless of where they originate.

Both clubs have been approached for comment following the latest development. Given the history involved, according to Yahoo Sports, this case looks set to keep tensions between Forest and Palace firmly in the headlines.
