Ipswich Town have completed the signing of Florentino Luis from Burnley, strengthening their midfield ahead of a demanding Premier League return. The move, worth around £16million, ends a swift chase that saw Town outmaneuver several rivals.

Hull City initially looked closest to landing the Portuguese international, pushing for a loan with an option to buy. However, Ipswich moved decisively with a permanent offer, quickly shifting momentum firmly in their favor.

Florentino's situation at Burnley had grown complicated. He only recently turned his loan move from Benfica into a permanent deal, yet relegation clearly reshaped his priorities. A swift return to the top flight made obvious sense for both player and club.

Under new manager Gary O'Neil, Ipswich have been unusually active this summer. Including Florentino, the club has now added eight new faces, spending roughly £100million while rebuilding across defense, attack and goalkeeping positions.

Midfield, though, remained a clear gap until now. Florentino's positional discipline and ball-winning instincts should provide exactly the platform Ipswich need, freeing their more creative players to operate with greater freedom further forward.

His numbers last season backed up that reputation too. Despite Burnley's struggles, he averaged the most tackles per ninety minutes of any Clarets player, becoming one of few consistent performers throughout a difficult campaign.

Florentino arrives with genuine pedigree. Before switching to English football, he made over 180 appearances for Benfica, winning two league titles and gaining regular European experience along the way.

That composure under pressure should translate well into Championship survival battles awaiting Ipswich this season. His defensive platform allows attacking reinforcements like Chuba Akpom and Daizen Maeda greater license to press forward confidently.

According to Sky Sports, Ipswich still hope to add further depth before the window closes, including a potential return for former loanee Julio Enciso. Florentino's arrival, though, addresses arguably their most pressing need.

Burnley, meanwhile, must now find fresh options after losing multiple midfielders this summer.
