Roma Push for Loan, Chelsea Want a Clean Break

Alejandro Garnacho has given his blessing to a Roma move, having reportedly opened the door to the switch last week. Since then, club-to-club talks have continued with intermediaries involved, though a final agreement remains elusive. The core disagreement centers entirely on structure rather than the player's willingness.

Roma insist on a loan featuring a mandatory buy clause, an approach that worked spectacularly with Donyell Malen last season. That deal helped secure Champions League qualification, and Roma clearly want to replicate the model. Under their proposal, a roughly €5 million loan fee would accompany a €35 million option, one that becomes obligatory once specific appearance or performance thresholds are met.

Chelsea, however, aren't keen on repeating recent history. Having already navigated a similarly complicated arrangement involving Nicolas Jackson, the Blues want a permanent, guaranteed sale instead. Their valuation sits closer to £42.5 million, leaving a meaningful gap between the two positions. Garnacho's underwhelming debut season, just one Premier League goal, has clearly softened his perceived value, giving Roma leverage in the negotiation.

Time Pressure Building on Both Sides

Adding urgency here, Garnacho currently finds himself excluded from Chelsea's pre-season plans entirely. That exclusion signals the club's clear intent to move him regardless of how these talks conclude. For Roma, meanwhile, strengthening under Gian Piero Gasperini ahead of a Champions League return makes solving this equation increasingly important.

Ultimately, resolution likely hinges on the buy clause's trigger conditions. Should Roma agree to looser appearance thresholds, Chelsea might accept guaranteed conversion and effectively get their permanent sale anyway.
