Medical Concerns End £35m Pursuit
Manchester United's move for Ederson won't be revisited this summer. Talks collapsed last Friday, and sources close to the negotiations confirm there's no path back to reviving them before the window shuts. The Brazilian midfielder underwent medical assessments in England, and results raised enough concern to halt everything.
Originally, United had agreed a package worth around £35 million, potentially rising past £39 million with add-ons. Personal terms were sorted too, with a contract through 2030 reportedly on the table. None of that matters now. Ederson completed part of his medical testing stateside during the World Cup, then traveled to England for further checks. Afterward, United simply walked away.
For Atalanta, though, this outcome isn't necessarily unwelcome. Losing Casemiro left United needing central midfield reinforcement, and Ederson had seemed the obvious fix. Instead, the club pivoted quickly elsewhere, completing moves for Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans within days. That speed suggests United's midfield rebuild continues regardless of one collapsed deal.
Atalanta Moves Fast to Retain Him
Rather than wait and risk losing him for nothing, Atalanta acted immediately. The Serie A club has already prepared a new contract offer, extending Ederson's deal well beyond its current 2027 expiry. Formal talks with his representatives are expected to begin shortly.
Atalanta maintain there's no serious underlying issue with Ederson's fitness, and they're not alone in believing it. AC Milan have reportedly shown interest too, sensing an opportunity given the uncertainty around his valuation. Ultimately, though, Atalanta's priority is straightforward: keep hold of a player they still consider one of Serie A's finest options in midfield.
