Lucas Digne has officially completed his move to Paris Saint-Germain, leaving Aston Villa in a deal worth €7 million. The France international has signed until June 2029, marking a sentimental return to the club where his professional career first flourished over a decade ago.
Notably, this switch was driven largely by the player himself. Reports confirm Digne strongly wanted the move, drawn by PSG's ambitious project and eager to begin a fresh chapter at 32 years old. That enthusiasm shone through in his own comments following the announcement.
"I am very honoured to be returning to Paris Saint-Germain following the wonderful experience I had here more than ten years ago," Digne said. "I am particularly impressed by how the club has developed over the years. The working conditions at the Campus are exceptional and reflect the club's ambitions. I can't wait to start this new chapter and put all my experience at the service of the team."
Digne's history with PSG runs deep. He first joined from Lille back in 2013, spending two seasons in Paris before departing for Barcelona via a loan at Roma. Since then, his career has taken him through Everton and Aston Villa, accumulating valuable experience across multiple top European leagues. Now, he returns as a considerably more seasoned defender than the one who left.
Reuniting with Luis Enrique adds further intrigue. The pair previously worked together at Barcelona a decade ago, and that familiarity could ease his integration into PSG's squad considerably.
Villa Bid Farewell After Standout Spell
Aston Villa, for their part, expressed genuine gratitude for Digne's contribution. He joined from Everton in January 2022 and went on to make 182 appearances, scoring four goals while registering 24 assists along the way. Crucially, he played a key role in Villa's Europa League triumph last season, their first major trophy since 1996.
His departure continues a pattern at Villa Park this summer, following exits by Youri Tielemans and Morgan Rogers. Rebuilding around a younger core appears to be Unai Emery's evolving strategy.
At PSG, Digne is expected to provide senior competition for Nuno Mendes at left-back. Given the club's Champions League ambitions, according to ESPN, that depth could prove valuable across a demanding season.
